Since God is our God, our father and we are His children, His worshippers, we should have a direct communication line with Him. It is important to hear when God talks and understand what He is saying and obey Him. God is constantly talking to us, to reveal secret things to us, to tell us what is to come, to explain what has happened and show us how to help others.
The question is what is God saying to you? Has God said anything? Are you listening to God or have you drowned God’s voice in a sea of your unending ranting, worries or requests. Is your communication channel with God one sided where you are the only communicator? God is not a radio which just talks and talks with no restraint, you can ignore Him enough to silence Him. Think about it, do you really want to silence God?
I am excited about the passage above and will like to personalize it…”and the Lord spoke to Nene saying…” it shows intimacy when God speaks to you. One of my favorite parts of the bible is Genesis 18:17 when God asked “Can I hide from Abraham what I am about to do?” I am always thrilled to think that I’d get to a point sooner than later where God won’t want to hide anything from me like Abraham. That’s the kind of intimacy with God that we should aspire for; where God can trust us with His future plans. Most of us are content with having a relationship with God that centers on “us” (God and us) but that’s not what God intended. Take a look at your relationship with your earthly father, you know what he is about to do, what he has done and is presently doing, you don’t always have to ask him about his plans, he offers the information freely because he trusts you and enjoys sharing with you. The information he offers is not limited to “you and him” events but encompasses everything he is part of. That’s what God wants from us… listening ears and receptive hearts. When we listen, we should be excited about it even if we think it has nothing to do with us… I’ve heard people (and I have been guilty) say God showed me this and I was wondering what it had to do with me... how selfish! Can you imagine calling up a friend and pouring out the details of your day only to have him/her roll their eyes and say/think I wonder what that has to do with me? Eventually, you won’t be calling up that person anymore or maybe you’d keep the communication to a “need to know basis”. Is that what we want from God? I imagine NO! When we do not honor or seek a relationship with our earthly fathers, it causes our relationships to be estranged and it is the same way with God, we have to work towards maintaining a relationship with Him.
God owes man (you and I) nothing, absolutely nothing! Not even to speak to/with us, but we thank Him that He willingly wants to speak to us. He speaks to us through many ways, His words (Bible), dreams, visions, other people and a still small voice. He knows that His words are the direction we live by and the light that brightens up our dark paths.(Ps 119:105) David cherished the word of God and it helped him stay holy (Thy word have I hid in my heart that I may not sin against you Ps 119:11)
I’ve also heard people say (and I was guilty of this as well) How do I know it is God talking, well if you are a true child of God, you should know His voice, you will be able to distinguish His voice from every other voice (John 10:27). It comes with constant fellowship with Him. When you are constantly in the presence of God, you eventually get familiar with His ways and His voice. When you sheepishly follow God, seeking Him with all your heart, He will fill you up (Matthew 5:6).
It is important to hear from God because He wants to teach us His way (Ps 25:9). He wants to help us make the right decisions (Is 30:21). He wants to tell us what the future holds (John 16:13). He wants to protect us (Ps 32:8). He wants to teach us what is best for us (Isaiah 48:17). He wants to lead us to springs of living water (Rev 7:17). He wants to take us to glory (Ps 73:24).
We can see that the entire life of a child of God is solely dependent on what God is saying… (not what we think He is saying). We need to familiarize ourselves with God, get used to Him by spending time in His presence. That’s the only way we can get to know Him better.
God, please help us love you the way we should. May we be able to recognize your voice and obey you at all times. Help us to be thrilled about all you have to say to us and reveal secret things to us. In Jesus Name, Amen
